School Summary and Features

  • Established in 1812.
  • Opened on 9th January with 9 boy students, all the some of Methodist Church Ministers.
  • Girls admitted first in the 1970s.
  • We follow the national curriculum for schools in England and Wales.
  • We currently have about 770 students in the secondary section (11-18 years) and some 250 students shared between Ashdown Lodge (Preparatory 2-5) and Bronte House (Primary 5-11).
  • We have about 100 boarders with the youngest being 11 and from many foreign countries, and other parts of the UK.
  • We currently have about 70 teaching staff in addition to a large amount of support staff.
  • The vast majority of our students go on to higher education with a significant proportion to the Top Universities each year.

Curriculum

  • Lessons are largely interactive and with mixed skill teaching evident in each lesson, determined by objectives set and progress measured.
  • Credits are awarded for good work in lessons or sustained over a period.
  • Commendations are awarded for especially good pieces of work/outcomes.
  • There are three terms in each academic year: September to Christmas, January to Easter, April to early July, each broken in the middle with a holiday usually of one week, but between terms we normally have two weeks. The Summer holiday lasts usually for about 8 weeks.

Events

We have a Council which meets regularly to discuss items of interest and concern to the student body and to include them in a democratic process

ICT

ICT is a very important discipline in school and it pervades all subjects and is taught in the lower school after which it can be taken up as an option

International Understanding

We have partnerships with many other countries and are constantly working to brooaden our horizons:
France,Germany,Spain,China,India,Indonesia,USA,Slovenia,and now Japan!
