Greetings students,

As your Diploma Programme Coordinator (DPC) at Teikyo University Kani High School, I look forward to guiding you on your educational journey and pursuing your dreams. I believe that everyone learns differently, but the most rewarding experiences challenge and inspire us. My mission is to work with you, your teachers, and the school community to make sure you find the success you deserve.

After completing my bachelor's degree in Education, I spent the better part of a decade teaching and working in high schools and educational institutions around Japan. I took on the roles of DPC, Extended Essay Coordinator, and TOK teacher. I believe the IB Programme's holistic approach to education is your ticket to a successful and fulfilling future.

I enjoy spending time outdoors with my family, camping, playing with my dog, snowboarding, and discussing the meaning of life with my students—especially when they play devil's advocate!

Hello there!

My name is Frank Yip, and I teach Pre-DP and DP Mathematics. A little bit about myself - I was born in Hong Kong, studied Engineering in university and worked as a researcher in the United States, and taught Mathematics in an international school in Singapore for years before coming to Japan.

Before becoming a teacher, I saw how Mathematics played a central role in science and technology, and as a teacher, I feel privileged to tell my students all about it! Mathematics is more than just problem sets and tests - it is about how nature works and how humans create incredible tools to solve problems. So I can talk for hours when students ask me why we study Mathematics!

As a global citizen, I have lived and travelled in many parts of the world, and I am thrilled to interact with students from different countries. I want to hear their stories, and I have tales to tell them too.

Dear students,

My name is Emil Hanssen, and I will be teaching G10 Social Studies, DP Psychology, and TOK at Teikyo! I was born and raised in Sweden and have been living and working in Japan since 2014. I have been working in the IB ever since, in both the PYP, MYP and the DP. I enjoy teaching the IB, which I think is very similar to the Scandinavian education system. Students learn by inquiring, experimenting, and learning with the teacher as support rather than the traditional lecture approach. I am currently working towards a Ph.D. in Philosophy/History/Psychology, and I hope to bring a lot of ideas and experience into the classroom to make your time here engaging, enjoyable, and meaningful.

I practice Muay Thai and go mountain biking as often as I can. I love sailing when I can get my hands on a boat. I also like board games, and I look forward to setting up a board game club at Teikyo. My spirit animal is a fluffy unicorn, and my guilty pleasure is blueberry cheesecake ice cream.

Nice to meet you everyone and vi ses snart ("see you soon" in Swedish)!

Greetings everyone,

My name is Adam Holland, and I will be teaching Language and Literature and English for Academic Purposes at Teikyo Kani. I'm originally from Arizona in the US, where I studied Creative Writing and English Literature. After graduating, I moved to South Korea, where I discovered a passion for teaching, and since then, I have gone on to work with students of all ages at academies, high schools, and universities all over the world.

In my free time, I enjoy baking unique pizzas, watching movies, cycling, playing games with friends, and kickboxing (among many other things!). I don't have any pets right now, but I love both cats and dogs and get very excited when I see them.

I have been living and teaching in Japan for the last four years, and I am very excited to be working at a great high school like Teikyo. We will be reading (and watching!) a wide range of fun literature, poetry, short stories, and film in class, but more than anything, I am excited to hear your stories. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Hello everyone,

I'm Nathalie Veltmaat, and I will be teaching the science classes in the programme's first year. In the diploma years, I teach HL chemistry. I grew up and studied in the Netherlands. For my bachelor's and master's, I studied molecular life sciences at Wageningen University. A part of my bachelors was a 4-month extended neuroscience minor at the University of Helsinki. As a university student, I tutored high school students and discovered my passion for teaching.

At school, I want students to think about the experiments and help them to connect the theory to the experimental results. By introducing various learning activities in the classroom, students are guided and challenged to remember the material and connect different topics.

In my free time, I like to read novels, play board games, and try out all sorts of activities: hiking in nature, pottery, meditation, photography and kayaking, for example. So when you come to our school, I'd love to hear all about your hobbies! Maybe this will give me an idea for a new fun activity in the science lab!

Greetings, everyone!

My name is Diego Parra, and I am the Biology teacher for both PreDP and DP. I hail from Colombia, a land known for producing the finest coffee in the world, and I am also a passionate lover of this beverage in all its forms.

In Colombia, I pursued my studies in Biology with a special focus on Entomology and Biotechnology. Subsequently, I expanded my academic horizons in Australia, where I completed my Master's degree in Applied Sciences with an emphasis on Physics.
I enjoy staying active at the gym or on cycling routes on weekends. When I return home, I take pleasure in preparing delicious pancakes. Additionally, I have a profound appreciation for nature, hiking, and travelling. I avidly enjoy science fiction and series like Star Trek and Star Wars, among many others. I am also passionate about the world of anime.

It will be a pleasure to get to know everyone and, most importantly, to share my enthusiasm/Passion for science. Espero verlos pronto a todos (I look forward to meeting you very soon, in Spanish).
